Tefillin custom-made written by Sofer Avrohom Dovid Wolffe. The letters have incredible shape and artistry. Rabbi Moshe Weiner, author of a book (in Hebrew) on the Alter Rebbes ksav, highly recommends Sofer Avrohom Dovid Wolffe for his artistry, reliability, and knowledge of the laws. (See letter of recommendation) The special Hidurim laws and customs are followed to beautify the spiritual potency of this mitzvah, beautifying the Tefillin with intentions especially when writing Shem Hashem, observance of Mikvah, and observances recommended in holy texts. Its letters are written according to the Alter Rebbe Admur Hazaken Author of Shulchan Aruch Harav, which the Alter Rebbe created to bring together opinions on the shapes of the letters according to the revealed laws of Torah and Kabbalah tradition. This ksav has the advantage of satisfying opinions in the revealed and inner aspects of Torah (Kaballah and Chassidus). Few Sofrim around the world are proficient in this script. Sofer Avrohom Dovid has been writing this script for over 26 years. The impression gifted to the body mind heart and soul with a Mehudar Tefillin of this kind cannot be described. These Tefillin are one of a kind. It is a custom-made extra-large Tefillin written by Sofer Avrohom Dovid Wolffe.  The Batim (cases) and straps are carefully selected for quality to preserve their halachic requirements of maintaining their square shape, and are the largest size of 4 cm by 4 cm.

(The scrolls /parshios can be ordered without the cases/ Batim for less cost)

A Painful Reality

In recent years, troubling incidents have shaken the world of STA"M (Sifrei Torah, Tefillin, and Mezuzahs).
One well-known case involved a sofer who was not Shomer Shabbos, yet produced and sold non-kosher parchments through businessmen to even respected Judaica stores thought to maintain the highest standards. These items were purchased by communities and families who trusted the sellers completely, unaware that the source of the writing was halachically invalid.

Sadly, this is not an isolated case. As the market for STA"M has grown, more and more sales are handled by middlemen, businessmen who are not sofrim, and who often cannot personally vouch for the halachic quality of the items they sell.

The Role and Responsibility of a Sofer

A sofer is far more than a craftsman. He is a guardian of kedusha (holiness), trained in the precise halachos of STA"M.
Every letter must be written perfectly; one small error can invalidate an entire Torah scroll or a pair of tefillin.
This work demands physical endurance, sharp focus, and yiras Shamayim, awe and humility before the sacred text.

A businessman or reseller, even one with good intentions, cannot personally guarantee these details. He must rely on others’ word, which means the buyer is, too.

The Truth About Computer Checking

Many people are reassured when told that a scroll was “checked by computer.”
While computer checking is a valuable tool, it is not a guarantee of kashrus.

Most programs only compare the text to a digital database to detect missing or extra letters.
They do not check:

  • Whether letters are properly formed according to halacha

  • Whether any letters are touching or broken

  • Whether crowns (tagin) are missing or misplaced

  • Or whether the spacing and alignment meet halachic standards

That is why it is essential to confirm:

  • What kind of computer check was done

  • Can you see the report

  • Who was the magiah (certified examiner) who personally reviewed the writing after the Sofer completed it

A genuine Sofer will always be transparent about these details.

Questions Every Buyer Should Ask

Before purchasing a Sefer Torah, Tefillin, or Mezuzah, ask these essential questions:

  1. Who wrote it?
    – Is the Sofer known and properly trained in the halachos of STA"M?

  2. Who checked it?
    – Did the seller personally review the writing?
    – Who was the magiah (examiner) who checked it after completion?
    – Is the magiah known and reliable?

  3. Was a computer check done?
    – What type of computer check was performed?
    – Can I see the actual report?

  4. What is the level of the writing?
    – Is it lechatchila (ideal) or b’dieved (minimal standard)?
    – Has the Sofer or magiah confirmed this in writing?

A reliable source will have no hesitation answering these questions or providing documentation.

Beyond the Basics

The questions above represent only the most basic starting points.
There are many additional aspects that affect the kashrus and quality of STA"M, including:

  • The type and quality of the klaf (parchment) thickness, treatment, and preparation methods vary greatly

  • The batim (leather boxes) of the Tefillin, their durability, precision, and beauty range from minimal halachic standards to very high craftsmanship

  • The ink, sewing, and parchment alignment, all of which influence both halachic validity and longevity

A knowledgeable Sofer STA"M can explain these differences clearly and help guide you in choosing items that are not only kosher but beautiful, durable, and worthy of their holiness.

A Matter of Holiness and Integrity

When we fulfill the mitzvah of STA"M, we connect to generations of faith and to the words given at Sinai.
Every letter represents a world of meaning. Ensuring that those letters are written and checked properly is not merely a technical matter,  it is a sacred responsibility.

May we all merit to perform this mitzvah with purity, understanding, and true holiness.
